Dog Treat Recipes Your Golden will Love!

Eating healthy can be a challenge at the best of times. We try to make good choices, and pick up food stuffs that are more or less healthy, cutting back on the processed chemicals and refined sugars that we know are just plain awful for us. Making that choice is a little easier for us as we can read the ingredients list, know what’s inside, and decide whether or not it’s something we want to eat. For your Golden, on the other hand, not so much, especially when it comes to treats. There’s nothing wrong with treating or even spoiling your dog (we’re all guilty of it) but why wouldn’t we take the same approach to our dog’s treats as we do our own?

For starters, Golden puppy treats can have a lot of fillers and other junk in them that not only lacks any nutritional value, but can even make your dog sick. Just think back to any time there was a recall on a specific brand of dog treat due to ‘x’ chemical or ingredient. You probably don’t have to go back very far to find one that happened recently. Rather than risk the puppy “junk” food, why not kick it up a notch and make your very own Golden puppy approved treats?

Check out some of these recipes that you can make yourself. Not only are they nutritious and lacking in any of the processed fillers, but your dog is sure to love them!

Leftover Trail Mix- Not only can you get rid of some leftovers you don’t want to eat, but this makes for a great snack while you’re hiking or out and about.

Ingredients:

Pieces of Meat (Chicken/Beef/Pork) Just be sure to rinse off any seasoning. Potatoes Veggies (No Onions) Fruit (No Grapes or Raisins)

Cut ingredients into half inch thick pieces. Spray lightly with cooking spray. Place into food dehydrator or in oven at 200 degrees until dried.

Homemade Peanut Butter Dog Treats- A quick and easy bake and take your dog is sure to love!

Ingredients:

2/3 Cup of Pumpkin Puree 1/4 Cup of Peanut Butter (Make sure your peanut butter doesn’t use any artificial sweeteners like xylitol which can be bad for your pup) 2 Large Eggs 3 Cups Whole Wheat Flour

Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Mix wet ingredients until well combined and gradually add 2 1/2 cups of flour until it’s all mixed in. Add the last half cup of flour until the dough is no longer sticky. Once it’s all mixed, knead the dough on a lightly floured counter until it all comes together, then roll it out to desired thickness (we prefer about 1/4 inch) and use your favorite cookie cutter to stamp out the shapes. Bake for about 20-25 minutes or until golden brown around the edges and Voila! DIY Peanut butter dog biscuits!

Making healthy snacks and treats for your dog isn’t nearly as difficult as you might have thought it was. Not only can you control what your dog is eating, but you can build them the perfect treat to suit both their pallet and their dietary needs. Enjoy!
